Morrison Institute wants to hear from high school seniors with creative ideas about and solutions to Arizona’s greatest challenges.

The Young Steward program invites Arizona high school seniors to share their public policy ideas and promote “stewardship”-public leadership committed to doing what is best for Arizona regardless of political philosophy or personal gain. Young Steward awards are based on an essay about a public issue of critical importance. Applicants are invited to address a community issue or problem they are passionate about and offer solutions on that issue to Arizona leaders. Essays must include specific recommendations for policymakers on how the issue should be addressed.

AWARDS:
First Place: $1,500 scholarship to ASU • Second Place: $1,000 scholarship to ASU • Honorable Mention may be designated for other outstanding essays.

TO APPLY:
Submit an essay about a public issue of critical importance to Arizona (two-pages maximum; typed, double-spaced, 12-point type) accompanied by a Young Steward Application Form. The essay should analyze a specific public issue and include specific recommendation(s) to policymakers on how that issue should be addressed. One essay per applicant. All contact information must be included; incomplete applications may be disqualified. Download application here.

DEADLINE: Applications must be postmarked by March 31, 2009.

SPECIAL CRITERIA:
Awards will not be based on financial need or the academic achievement of the applicant. However, awards will only be given to students who attend ASU. Should an award winner decide not to attend ASU, the award would be forfeited.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Essays will be reviewed and awards determined by representatives from ASU, The Arizona Republic, Tucson Citizen, and Arizona’s public policy leadership. Essays will be judged on the clarity of analysis and quality of policy recommendation(s). Award-winning essays will be published by The Arizona Republic and Tucson Citizen in addition to the scholarship award. The selection committee or Morrison Institute reserves the right not to make an award if no essays are acceptable.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND:
Elaine and Richard Morrison established this unique program to commemorate Morrison Institute’s 20+ years of policy research. Morrison Institute’s Board of Advisors is committed to the development of this special program.

Today marks the start of the fifth week of class here at ASU. I think that this is a good time to talk a bit about classes.

I went to a small high school about a mile north of the Downtown Phoenix campus. To provide some numbers, my graduating class had thirty-five students. Of the 35, half of us traveled from class to class together and the other half did likewise. Essentially, I have been in small class settings before so I am relatively used to them.

Of the classes that meet in a location at a specific time (i.e. not online or independent study courses), two have 35-40 students (each) in them. In these two classes, I think that I am the only student from the College of Public Programs. The rest are from the other colleges on the Downtown Phoenix campus. The other two meet on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. Those are significantly smaller, with five and eight people in those classes, respectively.

Something about these small classes and the format thereof is that everyone has to be on the ball. These are discussion-driven courses (here, they’re called seminars) so you have to do the assigned readings. But you know what? I’d prefer these small seminars over a large lecture any day. The largest class in which I’ve been had 196 students. True, it’s medium-sized by ASU’s standards but it was extremely large by my standards.

Cheers-
Edward Jensen

Here’s some food for thought:

Just because you are going to college/university doesn’t mean that you can’t start getting ahead in the world financially. I see that prospective students are sent lots of information about Taylor Place (I am, too!); this isn’t different from when I entered ASU in Fall 2006 and I received information on living at ASU Tempe on a weekly basis. So when people say that living on campus is awesome and that we really would like to you, you don’t have to do that.

I live in a condominium north of ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus along the light rail line. Come the spring semester of 2009, getting to ASU Downtown Phoenix Campus will be incredibly easy: this is because of the light rail. I board a train outside of where I live, and in 10 minutes or so, I’m at ASU. If I need to get to Tempe, add on 23 minutes. All this is regardless of traffic, because light rail is not affected by traffic since it is its own right-of-way!

Anyway, maybe now is the time for you to buy a place to live and start building a portfolio. Plus, this assuages a key requirement for the Fall 2008 semester: College of Public Programs students who choose to live on campus must live in downtown Phoenix. Well, you’re not living on campus but instead you can live on the light rail line, which extends from west Mesa to Christown/Spectrum Mall in north-central Phoenix. Getting from both termini of the light rail to downtown Phoenix is no more than 30 minutes, so it is as if you are living on campus.

Of course, you shouldn’t take financial advice from me. Talk to your financial planner and REALTOR and get information from them. It is, as I have said, food for thought.

Recently, I featured an NBC Nightly News special on the ASU School of Sustainability. In my excitement, I forgot to tie in how it applies to my major.

Urban + Metropolitan Studies is the foundation for all things that relate to the quality of life in the dense urban areas as well as entire regions. Sustainability is the new paradigm in quality of life for everyone on this planet – from the urban centers of the world’s most dense cities to the Amazon rainforest in South America or the ice caps at the north and south poles.

It is my career goal to get an MPA (Master’s in Public Administration). Armed with knowledge of urban quality-of-life as well as planetary quality-of-life, making this world a better place is the core of who I will become.

Now, all I have to do is decide if I want to minor in sustainability or add it as a second major…

Bonus – ASU President Dr. Michael Crow talking about Sustainability

Urban planners draw upon School of Public Affairs
expertise
It may not seem like the Valley has much in common with cities in the Middle East or Australia. But large urban areas springing up in desert locales share many common issues – water supply, pollution problems and affordable housing – among them.

That’s where the School of Public Affairs in the College of Public Programs can make a difference, through partnerships and by recognizing those who serve the public good. The school was instrumental in recently nominating David Smith, Maricopa County manager, for a National Public Service award that he ultimately won. Smith spearheaded a major turnaround in Maricopa County from a place that was described as a “poster child for bad government” in Governing Magazine about 10 years ago into a county described by the same magazine as one of the two best-run county governments in the United States.

“The award is a premier award for a public service practitioner,” says Robert Denhardt, director of the School of Public Affairs. “It’s considered a lifetime achievement award. It really is wonderful recognition.”

REMINDER! Dr Nan Ellin’s lecture on her book, Integral Urbanism, is TODAY at 4:30pm in AG250 on the Tempe Campus.

Dear Barrett Students,

When I was your age, one of the ideas I had for a career that seemed extremely useful and sort of romantic was Urban Design. I liked biology, I liked writing, I thought (don’t we all?) that I was a bit artistic, but I wanted to help people directly as well. Urban Design seemed to combine everything I liked.

I still think it combines a lot of the interests that good honors students have, and THIS AFTERNOON, at 4:30 PM, in Room 250 of the Agriculture Building, the Director of ASU’s “Urban and Metropolitan Studies” program, Dr. Nan Ellin, will talk about her work in urban design and about the courses and the major you can take in her department.

Nan is a very nice person and good speaker, and I think her program is an exciting one that is particularly suited to Phoenix as a rapidly developing city. I strongly urge you to attend the talk, and hope to see you there this afternoon!

Mark Jacobs
Dean, Barrett Honors College
Professor, School of Life Sciences

Hope to see you there! -Edward Jensen

After graduating with my U&MS degree (hopefully in May 2010), I plan to continue on in the School of Public Affairs and get my Master of Public Administration, or M.P.A. degree. The MPA program at ASU is highly-ranked: 26th overall highest MPA program in the USA – and it is the highest-ranked MPA program in Arizona’s state university system (including the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University). And what about after my M.P.A.? I’m thinking of going all the way – a Ph.D. in Pubic Administration, once again through ASU.

When I chose the ASU U&MS program at Summer 2007, I looked for a program through which I could continue my education. I have most certainly found such a program.

Continued luck in your college searches. Also, feel free to ask any questions you may have!

I thought it would be appropriate if I shared some information with you all on my background and how I became the Urban & Metropolitan Studies (U&MS) major that I am.

For all my life, I have been interested in transportation infrastructure and policy. Growing up, my favorite game was (and still is!) SimCity 2000. Within the last few years, I had become incredibly successful at playing the game. Because of my skill at that game, it seemed like the natural fit for my career would be to go into civil engineering.

I entered Arizona State University in the fall semester of 2006 as a Civil Engineering major through the ASU College of Engineering. I started out well with the requisite engineering courses: chemistry, physics, calculus, etc. until I realized that the ASU civil engineering program focused on how to build the various items (e.g. roads, bridges, highways, rail systems, etc.). I have always been more interested in where to build them, and especially the policy behind these various items of transportation infrastructure.

With this, over the summer of 2007, I had to do some serious soul searching. I figured that, given the immense size of Arizona State University, there had to be something out there that would match my desire to go into transportation infrastructure and policy. I looked at ASU’s list of undergraduate majors – all 250 of them – and I stumbled upon two very interesting majors – Urban Planning (through the ASU College of Design) and U&MS (through the ASU School of Public Affairs). Considering both, I realized that I could major in one and take a minor in the other. Here I am today – majoring in U&MS and taking a minor in Urban Planning. I did it this way because the U&MS major offered more flexibility and a minor in Urban Planning – needing only eighteen (18) credit hours – fit in within the required elective courses needed for the U&MS major. To go on top of this, I’m adding a second minor in sustainability through the new School of Sustainability.

The beauty of my present major is that it is incredibly flexible – which is something that my former major lacked.

Best of luck in your college search!
Edward Jensen
