For a couple of years, I’ve worked alongside Kirsten Martin in the Dean’s Office for our College. She will graduate in a couple days with her Master in Social Work.

To demonstrate the amazing things that College of Public Programs students are doing, here’s a quick note that she sent to her family, friends, and colleagues about a program that she implemented during her internship:

A program my supervisor and I implemented at my internship was featured on the channel 99 for those who have cox cable. This is a great program that teaches kids to be peaceful in their communities as well as in school or their homes. They have given service in the community and donated money to charities. This is a school in which 97% of the students receive free lunches due to socio-economic status and live in inpoverished neighborhoods and crime ridden environments. They are such an inspiration to me as they try to teach others to be more peaceful and see the good in each other. They truly give hope in places where hope is not often found! I’m so proud of them! This is an example of what schools can do and the good they can bring, yet they are in danger right now. This school is slated for closure should proposition 100 not be passed. Please watch this video and think about whether these kids deserve to keep their school and continue the good work they are doing. Vote YES on prop 100, not for you, but for their future!

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: There is so much amazing stuff that my college does. Most higher-education institutions say that they teach students to change the world. There’s one difference, though: the College of Public Programs actually does change the world.

I’m proud to be a student in my college, the College of Public Programs.

The following editorial appeared in Thursday’s edition of The Arizona Republic. It was written by Dr. Debra Friedman, the University Vice President of the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus and the Dean of the College of Public Programs.

The College is shepherding the Spirit of Service Scholars program, a bold initiative that will honor 30 outstanding graduate and undergraduate students each year who will commit their future careers to federal, state and local government and non-profit organizations in service of solving society’s most challenging problems.

Help wanted: Seeking the next icons of city government.

Why should you care that Frank Fairbanks is retiring?

Ask yourself: Who actually runs your city? Your county? Your state?

As Phoenix’s city manager ends his 37-year career of public service for the city, it’s important to consider what this transition signifies for our community and nation.

Federal, state and municipal governments are facing a major challenge: Experienced public managers of the Baby Boom generation, like Fairbanks, are retiring or soon plan to do so. And, more than ever, fewer younger professionals are in line and prepared to step into those critical roles.

Even Phoenix’s No. 2 city staffer, Alton Washington, said he plans to follow his longtime boss into retirement soon.

Fewer public administrators means a diminished cadre of qualified people to oversee essential services like public safety, water resources, waste disposal, parks, human services and others. It means potentially dramatic impacts in areas like budgets, taxes, transportation, housing, education, labor and the environment.

Among the nation’s full-time federal workforce, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management reports that nearly 61 percent will be eligible to retire by 2016. The Center for Excellence in State and Local Government reports that 34 percent of state government workers and 36 percent of local government workers are 50 or older.

This inevitable exodus means the overall quality of life in communities throughout the nation may well suffer from an inability to meet urgent public needs.

In its third year of existence, ASU’s Academic Bowl finally gets a team from the College of Public Programs (CoPP).

I hope the first few weeks of classes are going well and that you are all enjoying the energy and excitement of a new school year! Anyway, CoPP student leaders are interested in pulling together a CoPP student team for the 2009 ASU Academic Bowl. For 2009, the academic event will feature 16 teams of undergraduate students competing for college pride and scholarship money in a fast-pace, question-and-answer format. The questions will cover a wide range of subjects, including current events, history, science, sports and culture. The majority of the even takes place in October with students preparing later this month.

If you are interested in joining the CoPP team, please join us for an overview and info session this Monday, 9/14 in UCENT 580A from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

For more info on Academic Bowl, go to: http://www.asu.edu/academicbowl/.

I hope you will come show the rest of ASU what I already know, which is that our students are the most well-rounded, high quality students at ASU!

The College of Public Programs has entered the social media frenzy. The guiding principle behind our adventure is that our presence should be continuous, engaging, updated frequently and that it should foster discussion. This push into new media is being done for many reasons, but mainly to keep the College visible to students by fostering a sense of connection, belonging and identity. Research evidence is great that 1) this sense of connection aids in recruitment and retainment, and that 2) the next wave of public relations and outreach will be through the use of new social media.

A number of outreach methods are being implemented through the Office of the Dean as a means to this end. Through the Student Ambassadors (StARs) program, current students maintain blogs offering their unedited perspective on student life in the College, at the Downtown Phoenix campus, and even in Downtown Phoenix. The StARs are working on a video series that will introduce new students to their advisors, the campus, and the community in which they will study.

We’re asking your participation to create effective presence in a number of other applications. If you have news, events, deadlines or thought-provoking issues related to life at CoPP, please pass your ideas to any Facebook administrator. The more often we post, the more connected our “fans” will feel to their College.

Last week also marked the end of tenure for three of my fellow Student Ambassadors. Candi Henriquez and Amarone Thach have been with us from the beginning and Kirsten Martin joined us a year ago. All three have made significant contributions to the program and though we are sad to see them leave us, we send them out into the world to go and change it, which they will.

[source: Corey Schubert, media manager, ASU College of Public Programs] Dr. Ann Nichols doesn’t sleep.

That’s how many people describe the mother of Arizona State University’s School of Social Work Tucson component, which Nichols essentially started from the trunk of her car.

Her retirement this summer will give Nichols time to reflect on a 39-year career at ASU, where she has trained more than 1,700 social workers and tirelessly worked to advance social justice and human rights across Arizona.

As the nation faces unprecedented shortages in the human and social service sectors in the coming years, her lifetime of accomplishments is a testament to the widespread impact one social worker can make.

“She has inspired hundreds of students to go out and make a difference in the world,” says Dr. Kathy Norgard, an ASU faculty associate who was a student in Nichols’ first graduating class.

Prof. Nichols joined ASU in 1970 as an assistant professor in the School of Social Work, then housed on the Tempe campus. When she realized a handful of students drove from Tucson to attend her classes, she began teaching a course in Tucson and “people came out of the woodwork,” Nichols says.

Nichols kept a stock of student applications and financial aid forms in her trunk, ferrying the completed materials to Tempe. She helped ASU realize the need to establish a Tucson component to meet the growing demand of students in Southern Arizona.

Since 1978, the faculty, students and graduates of the Tucson component have offered leadership in the health and human services community through clinical practice, community development, agency evaluation, program development, case management, educational supervision, advocacy and grant development.

“The fact that we have had such collaborative relationships in the community and within our faculty, staff and student body has made working here a joy,” says Nichols.

Nichols has advocated for issues such as universal health care, death penalty abolition, and prison and immigration reform. As the national director of the Society for Spirituality and Social Work, she brings together human service providers interested in exploring the connection between spirituality and healing.

Her teaching areas have included social services and policy, initiating change in communities and organizations, social work and criminal justice, and strategies against discrimination.

Nichols has received the Jefferson Award for Community Service; Federal Bureau of Prisons Volunteer Service Award; Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Social Workers-Arizona Chapter; and the YWCA Woman on the Move Award.

She is the mother of three natural children, five long-term foster children and grandmother of eight.

The Ann Weaver Nichols Scholarship/Fellowship Endowment has been established with the ASU Foundation, using donations from Nichols and other donors. The annual scholarship will provide financial support to Tucson-based students in the Master of Social Work program, especially those who are raising children as single parents or grandparents and who have a commitment to promoting social change to benefit vulnerable populations. To make a gift to this scholarship endowment, visit www.asufoundation.org/nichols or make a check payable to “ASU Foundation” and reference “Ann Nichols Scholarship” (account # 40003040). Please send the check to the College of Public Programs, Attn: Mina Hernandez, Scholarship Administrator, Mail Code 3520, Suite 600, 411. N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85004-0685.

The ASU Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that facilitates and manages private gifts to ASU. Contributions to the scholarship endowment may entitle donors to a charitable gift tax deduction under current tax law.

Friend and colleague Kirsten Martin has written yet another exceptional post that applies her fantastic way of looking at things, this time it’s through the medium of sock puppets. In her latest post, “The Theory of Sock Puppets“, she proposes using sock puppets as a way to alleviate stress and discontent in one’s work.

When I was in the first semester of my internship I found myself really struggling with the new organizational environment and specifically one of the other interns. I was in a bad position because as an intern I did not want to voice my opinions and concerns and “rock the boat” so to speak, so I chose to instead to bottle everything up and search for a more appropriate release. While in the StAR office one day an idea popped into my head while I was on a (sadly) usual rant about my struggles dealing with these conflicts. I was so frustrated that I just could not say the things I really wanted to say and felt almost stifled that I was not able to say what was on my mind. So my idea was this, if I had a sock puppet of this individual I could say everything I wanted to in the safety of my own home while inducing laughter rather than perpetuating my upset emotions.

[source: Corey Schubert, media manager, ASU College of Public Programs] Can tourism help eliminate hunger? That’s the hope of Waste Not Arizona, a nonprofit organization that has been working with local resorts to supply their unused food to the hungry in the Phoenix area. A recent research study by MBA students from Arizona State University’s W. P. Carey School of Business has been helping the organization increase its impact.

The study, part of a class taught by ASU Associate Professor Elliot Rabinovich, examined the supply chain processes leading from Phoenix-area tourist resorts to a network of local groups that feed the hungry. The study was a collaborative effort between the Megapolitan Tourism Research Center in the College of Public Programs and the Center for Services Leadership at the W. P. Carey School of Business. W. P. Carey MBA students Ross Cain, Xicheng Zhou and McCall Baldwin wrote the report.

Waste Not Arizona has a fleet of four refrigerated trucks that run in the Valley six days per week, picking up food from donors and delivering to several organizations that feed the hungry. The study focused on the organizational structure, current supply chain processes, the pros and cons of different initiatives within Waste Not Arizona’s network, and ways to maximize how the organization carries out its daily activities.

“The ASU supply chain analysis completed for the logistics side of Waste Not was invaluable,” said Dee Mitten, executive director of Waste Not Arizona. ”The caliber of analysis and suggestions for improvement were well-thought out, realistic and attainable. We tremendously value and appreciate the commitment of time, energy and enthusiasm devoted to this project.”

Dr. Timothy Tyrrell, director of the Megapolitan Tourism Research Center, initiated the project that led to the study. “The tourism industry gives much more than jobs and tax revenues back to the community,” Tyrrell said. “Tourism contributes to a wide range of economic and social qualities of life for local residents. This study is a great example of how the university can help tourism do an even better job of serving the public good.”

Dr. Rabinovich, who supervised the course, said the project was also beneficial for the students who took a hands-on approach and were engaged in learning from Waste Not Arizona’s operations. “For the students, this was an educational experience, as well,” Rabinovich said. “They were exposed to an area of the economy they rarely get to see as part of their MBA curriculum.”

Join the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus and the College of Public Programs for “Action, Advocacy, Arts” this Friday.

The ASU Downtown Phoenix campus will open its doors to the community at the 4th Annual Urban Gallery Exhibition from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 3 at the University Center at 411 N. Central Ave.

This free exhibit is part of First Friday and will feature four new art collections, with more than 500 pieces on display from ASU Emeritus faculty, nonprofit community organizations and artists, and students of Barrett, the Honors College, and South Mountain High School in Phoenix. Live music will be featured on two stages, along with dancers and interactive art demonstrations. Many artists and nonprofit groups will be on hand to discuss their work.

“The event is designed to welcome the community to its ASU Downtown Phoenix campus and to share the richly diverse art collection,” says Debra Friedman, University Vice President and Dean of the College of Public Programs at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus.

Among the new collections this year is “Migration: Immigration, Giving Honor to Cultures and Communities,” designed to encourage open-minded dialogue about an important and often divisive current issue. Phoenix artists including Luis Gutierrez, Martin Moreno, Emily Matyas and Francisco Garcia examine immigration as a global, national, local, and family phenomenon. The Cultural Arts Coalition, Neighborhood Ministries, Advocates for Latin@ Arts and Culture and South Mountain High School, among many others, use the arts to showcase their mission and strengthen shared community ties.

Other new art collections include “Spring Forward,” with works from artists, students and faculty of Barrett, the Honors College, celebrating the coming of spring.

Information Commons is showcasing “Double/Vision,” which brings together works from Phoenix artists Nancy Reinker and Diana Clauss.

Artwork in the “For Our Eyes” collection shares viewpoints from nonprofits in the Phoenix community and the people they serve. Another collection showcases the talent of ASU professors, expressed through the works of retired faculty members of the ASU Emeritus College. This includes influential African-American artist and educator Dr. Eugene Grigsby, Jr.

The campus will be filled with the sights of ASU graduate dance students performing with urban youth, live art demonstrations such as painting, kids’ crafts and interactive opportunities. Diverse music, poetry and performances will be provided by Barrett, the Honors College, local organizations and sponsors.

Live music includes steel drummers, tap dancers and local bands including Try Me Bicycle, Grupo Liberdade and Ten Dollar Outfit.

The 4th Annual Urban Gallery Exhibition is an Artlink shuttle stop, and planned in coordination with the Roosevelt Row block party.

More than 30 nonprofit groups are taking part, including Phoenix Children’s Hospital, AZ Wilderness Coalition, Neighborhood Ministries, the Cultural Arts Coalition, Hospice of the Valley, Downtown Phoenix Public Market, and PSA Art Awakenings.

The exhibition is among the highlights of a daylong community event, “Action, Advocacy and Arts,” focusing on the power of community at the Downtown Phoenix campus.

For information about the exhibit, contact ASU community liaison Malissa Geer at malissa.geer@asu.edu. For “Action, Advocacy and Arts” details, visit: http://copp.asu.edu/aaa.
